Driving
Carpooling
Because of the distance, the number of vehicles should be minimized.
Overnight Camping
There is the opportunity to camp overnight on Friday and Saturday nights, “across the road” from where we shoot. However, I expect most groups to treat this as a day-event.
For those camping, please plan to bring additional clothing, camping gear, food, cooking equipment, etc. Check within your troop or crew for more information. Due to fire danger, fires are not allowed. Propane stoves are acceptable to cook food, as long as sufficient fire precautions are taken.

Personal things to bring:
Required
- If you are under 18 years of age, you MUST bring a copy of the council’s permission form signed by your parent or guardian. While it says on it “bring 4 copies”, only 2 are needed.
- Shooting Permission (in PDF) The permission form allows the crew to allow you to handle firearms. The State of California requires this type of document be on-hand.
- Lunch for yourself
- Snacks (Don’t Forget)
- Drinks for lunch
- Sunscreen
- Rain gear (if it looks like rain), such as a poncho. However, we might cancel if it looks much like too much rain.
- Dress in layers. It sometimes gets very warm mid-day, but sometimes very cold and windy in the morning and late afternoon.
- Jacket/sweatshirt(s)
- Closed toe shoes and long pants are required for safety.
- Hat
Optional
- Okay to bring: Personally owned Rifles or shotguns. You MUST discuss this with Joe by the Wednesday before, so we can talk about ammo, transportation, etc. Must be known working. Legally transported. The federal Gun Free School Zones law requires *locked* transportation. The can be in a locked trunk, otherwise in locked cases.
- Personal Eye and Ear protection. We will also have crew supplied eye and ear protection.
- Targets – Cans/plastic bottles. Nothing you cannot easily clean up and take home with you. Discuss with Joe if there are questions.
- Light chairs (“umbrella chairs”, etc) as there isn’t any seating there.
Troop/Crew things to bring
- There is NO WATER available. One or more containers (5 gallon?) for potable water is advised. Contact Joe for more info.
- Chairs (white plastic patio type are best)
- Tables if you wish them for eating, etc.
- Lanterns if spending the night
- Light rakes to collect spent casings.
- There will be temporary toilet facilities during the day. If your group is staying the night then this is important to consider.
Directions to Tumey Hills
There are two routes that take a similar amount of time. I strongly recommend the first option.
- The route via Hwy 152 and I-5 is a much easier drive, on well-paved high speed roads. Even if it should take 5 minutes longer your drivers will be less stressed. The distance on Panoche Rd that is unpaved is shorter.
- The route South of Hollister is a much more intense drive, on narrow winding roads, and a longer distance on Panoche Road after the pavement ends. This route has a much higher chance of motion sickness for the passengers.
