SUMMARY:Tumey Hills Shooting Sports Day
DESCRIPTION:Summary:\n\nWho: Troop 37/201 from Los Altos as guests of Crew 568 from Watsonville. Troop 428 and 2428 from San Juan Bautista will also attend.\nWhat: Rifle Shooting. Some Pistol.\nWhen: Saturday May 7\, 2022\nWhere: Tumey Hills\, BLM Land\, Panoche Rd.\, Panoche CA  GPS: 36.57873812347204\, -120.69462150772132\n\nDescription\nWe have a great location for a shoot. Tumey Hills is public land\, managed by the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It is South of Hollister or Los Banos\, in Fresno County in the hills.\n\nHere is a link for direction purposes\, that shows the exact parking lot to use: https://www.google.com/maps/place/36%C2%B034’43.5%22N+120%C2%B041’40.6%22W/@36.5787381\,-120.6968102\,759m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xcea699255cff1e3b!8m2!3d36.5787381!4d-120.6946215 \nHere is the 10 day forecast for Panoche (the nearest weather station):\nhttps://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/ca/paicines/KCAPANO\nPlease Read!\n\nAll youth under 18 MUST have a copy of the permission form. See “Personal things to bring” section.\nAll Scouts BSA youth between 14 and 18 who wish to shoot centerfire rifles\, semi-auto 22 rifles\, or pistols\, MUST have their SM/ASM discuss with their parents first. Per BSA rules\, these are only for Venturers and guests of Venture crews who are of Venturing ages.\nALL ATTENDEES need to review the “Personal things to bring” section.\nAt least two people from each unit (SPL+Scoutmaster\, President+Advisor) need to review the “Troop/Crew things to bring”\n\nShooting\nWe plan to shoot:\n\nFor all\, including Scouts BSA members\, Venture Crew members and guests of the Venture Crews.\n\n.22 rifle (bolt action) with reactive targets\n\n\nShotguns slugs\, and 00 buckshot (pronounced “double aught buck”) (limited amount)\n\n\nIn addition\, for Venture Crew members\, and Guests of the Venture Crews\, including Troop members over 14 years old\n\nCenter fire rifle with steel targets (limited amount)\n.22 rifle (semi-auto) with reactive targets\n\n\nPossible\, depending upon staff and counts\n\nPistol shooting at reactive targets (limited amount)\n\n\n\n\n\nGuests\nIf a Crew 568 member is considering a guest\, please check with Joe about details (paperwork\, etc.)\nIf any of the other units is considering a guest\, please check with your Scoutmaster or Advisor about details including paperwork. \nDriving\nCarpooling\nBecause of the distance\, the number of vehicles should be minimized. \nOvernight Camping\nThere is the opportunity to camp overnight on Friday and Saturday nights\, “across the road” from where we shoot. However\, I expect most groups to treat this as a day-event. \nFor those camping\, please plan to bring additional clothing\, camping gear\, food\, cooking equipment\, etc. Check within your troop or crew for more information. Due to fire danger\, fires are not allowed. Propane stoves are acceptable to cook food\, as long as sufficient fire precautions are taken. \n\nPlanned schedule:\nNote: Times are subject to change on short notice\, depending upon the situation. \nDaylight hours\nTo aid in planning: \n\nSunrise 6:25 am PDT\nSunset 7:44 pm PDT\n\nSaturday Tentative Schedule\n\n6:45 – Crew 568 meeting place 1 – Aromas\n7:20 – Meeting place – McDonald’s\, 151 San Felipe Rd\, Hollister\, CA 95023\n9:15 – Tumey Hills\n9:45 – Safety Briefing\n10:00-10:30 – Start shooting\n4:00 – Cease fire\, start cleanup\n5:15 – Cleanup completed\, Leave\n6:15 – In-N-Out – 28900 Henry Miller Ave\, Santa Nella\, CA 95322\n7:00 – Leave In-N-Out for home\n\nCost info\n\nThis does NOT include any costs for items you will need to figure out for your group\, including \n\nOvernight camping\nFood for overnight camping or during the drive to or from your home\nTransportation\n\nAmmo is provided through a very generous grant from the NRA Foundation. \n\n\n$25 – supplies (cleaning\, rifle maintenance\, target maintenance etc.)\n$10 – transportation (give to your driver — gas is very expensive nowadays!) \nBring cash to pay Mr. Yetter of Crew 568 and your driver.\n\nPersonal things to bring:\nRequired\n\nIf you are under 18 years of age\, you MUST bring a copy of the council’s permission form signed by your parent or guardian. While it says on it “bring 4 copies”\, only 2 are needed.\n\nShooting Permission (in PDF)  The permission form allows the crew to allow you to handle firearms. The State of California requires this type of document be on-hand.\n\n\nLunch for yourself\nSnacks (Don’t Forget)\nDrinks for lunch\nSunscreen\nRain gear (if it looks like rain)\, such as a poncho. However\, we might cancel if it looks much like too much rain.\nDress in layers. It sometimes gets very warm mid-day\, but sometimes very cold and windy in the morning and late afternoon.\nJacket/sweatshirt(s)\nClosed toe shoes and long pants are required for safety.\nHat\n\nOptional\n\nOkay to bring: Personally owned Rifles or shotguns. You  MUST discuss this with Joe by the Wednesday before\, so we can talk about ammo\, transportation\, etc. Must be known working. Legally transported.  The federal Gun Free School Zones law requires *locked* transportation. The can be in a locked trunk\, otherwise in locked cases.\nPersonal Eye and Ear protection. We will also have crew supplied eye and ear protection.\nTargets – Cans/plastic bottles. Nothing you cannot easily clean up and take home with you. Discuss with Joe if there are questions.\nLight chairs (“umbrella chairs”\, etc) as there isn’t any seating there.\n\n\nTroop/Crew things to bring\n\n\nThere is NO WATER available. One or more containers (5 gallon?) for potable water is advised. Contact Joe for more info.\nChairs (white plastic patio type are best)\nTables if you wish them for eating\, etc.\nLanterns if spending the night\nLight rakes to collect spent casings.\nThere will be temporary toilet facilities during the day. If your group is staying the night then this is important to consider.\n\nDirections to Tumey Hills\nThere are two routes that take a similar amount of time. I strongly recommend the first option. \n\nThe route via Hwy 152 and I-5 is a much easier drive\, on well-paved high speed roads. Even if it should take 5 minutes longer your drivers will be less stressed. The distance on Panoche Rd that is unpaved is shorter.\nThe route South of Hollister is a much more intense drive\, on narrow winding roads\, and a longer distance on Panoche Road after the pavement ends. This route has a much higher chance of motion sickness for the passengers.\n\nHere is the location on a map: https://www.google.com/maps/place/36%C2%B034’43.5%22N+120%C2%B041’40.6%22W/@36.5787381\,-120.6968102\,759m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xcea699255cff1e3b!8m2!3d36.5787381!4d-120.6946215 \nHere are GPS coordinates: 36.57873812347204\, -120.69462150772132
