SUMMARY:Kayak Kut -- ADULT ONLY
DESCRIPTION:This is an adult only event. If you like using power tools and like woodworkiing\, this is the event for you. We precut all the lumber for the Kayak Build. We also precut all the canvas so if you’re not a carpenter but you know how to use a sharp knife\, you’ll be able to contribute. It typically takes about a morning to prepare the materials for 30 boats \nOn Saturday\, April 2\, 10:00 am.\, we will have the kayak kut.  This is the activity where we pre-cut all of the materials – wood and canvas – for the upcoming kayak build.  First-year scouts – scouts who have recently joined the troop – build kayaks. \nLocation is Tom Maiello’s house: 10090 Phar Lap Drive\, Cupertino \nWe need adult volunteers … parents who have helped their scouts to build kayaks in previous years – to help us for about four hours on Saturday\, April 2.  You don’t need any woodworking experience – we will show you what to do. \nThe more adults we have helping\, the faster the work will go. \nPlease contact: \nTom Maiello\nASM\, Troop 37\n(510) 364-0748\nmaiello.tom@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Florida SeaBase 2022
DESCRIPTION:Are you a certified SCUBA diver?  Would you like to SCUBA dive in the Florida Keys for Spring Break this year?  If so\, this trip is for you!!!\n\nWe will be going to the Boy Scout’s Florida Sea Base High Adventure camp for the week of Friday\, April 8\, 2022 until Sunday\, April 16\, 2022 for a Live Aboard SCUBA diving trip.  While our first two nights and our last night will be on land in the Sea Base dorms\, we will spend the remainder of the trip living aboard a boat as we sail and dive throughout the Florida Keys.  Over the course of our week on the water\, we hope to do some 15 SCUBA dives\, including three or four night dives.  In between dives\, we will do a little sailing and a little fishing as we cruise through the Florida Keys.  To make the logistics of this all work\, we will need to extend our week of spring break a day\, leaving Los Altos on Friday\, April 8.\n\nAs this is a trip for hard-core divers\, all participants must be open water SCUBA certified at a minimum.  While there are a number of local places that offer SCUBA certification\, I can recommend Scuba Fusion in San Mateo (http://scubafusion.com/) and Diver Dan’s in Santa Clara (https://www.diverdans.com/).  The minimum age requirement to attend the Florida Sea Base is 13 years old and in the 8th grade\, or fourteen years old.  Our crew size is capped at 12 persons.\n\nAll participants (Adult and Scout)\, need to submit the full BSA Medical form with the Sea Base option by December 1\, 2021.   Because Florida Sea Base has pretty severe restrictions for people with asthma or taking medications (including for ADHD)\, it requires that we provide our medical forms well in advance of the trip to avoid any surprises.\n\nWhile pricing details remain to be worked out\, our final cost should be ~$2\,250 per person. $500/person is required now\, with the balance due December 1.  The entire cost is non-refundable.  If you back out\, you have to find a replacement or pay the entire cost as our pricing is dependent on our having 12 persons on our crew.\n\nTentative Itinerary:\n\nFriday\, April 8\, 2022; Depart San Francisco airport (SFO) at 9:35am and fly to Fort Lauderdale.  Once in Fort Lauderdale\, we will take a shuttle to the Florida Sea Base\, which is a two and a half hour drive away.  We will eat dinner in the Miami area on the way down.\n\nSaturday\, April 9\, 2022:  After breakfast and lunch at Florida Sea Base\, our adventure will begin at 1:00pm\, as we will take swim tests\, get our SCUBA gear\, have a SCUBA review\, meet our boat crew\, etc.\n\nSunday\, April 10\, 2022:  Depart Sea Base in our boat for our week long Live Aboard SCUBA adventure.\n\nSaturday\, April 16\, 2022:  Return to Sea Base; show off our Aloha-wear and limbo skills at the Luau that night.\n\nSunday\, April 17\, 2022:  After breakfast at Sea Base\, we will go on an airboat tour of the Everglades and then grab lunch and return to Fort Lauderdale for our 7:15pm flight back to San Francisco\, arriving at SFO at 10:49pm.  We will eat dinner in the airport.\n\nYou can get more details about Florida Sea Base and our trip here:  https://www.bsaseabase.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/2021-Scuba-Participant-Guide-Feb23.pdf\nhere:  https://www.bsaseabase.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/2022-Informational-Brochure-vf.pdf\nand here:  http://www.bsaseabase.org/\n

SUMMARY:Kayak Build Day 1
DESCRIPTION:Kayak Build Registration Deadline is Tuesday\, March 22\, 2022.  \n \nAll scouts from Troop 37 and Troop 201 who are interested in building a kayak should register for this event.  We may have to limit the number of registrants due to the limited number of adults who have volunteered to support the build.  Currently\, we are limiting the build to the first 20 scouts who register and pay the $300 fee.  If more adults volunteer to support the build we will increase the number of scouts who can participate.\nThis is the first half day for the new scouts to build their kayaks. They cut out the center of the spreaders\, round the paddle blades\, round the ends of all runners and sand the ends of the poles. At the end of the event\, the scouts take home all their lumber \n** SCOUTS who want to build a Kayak must register for Kayak Build Day 1 (no need to register for Kayak Build Day 2\, though both days required to participate and build).  Each scout needs to bring an adult to work with the them on each of the Build Days\, however the adult should not register. \nThis is a great event for new Scouts (and incoming Scouts are strongly encouraged to build in their first year)\, but it is open to any Scout wanting to build a kayak (or another kayak). \nAlso\, we need some adults who are not building Kayaks with their scouts\, but would like to assist Kayak build planning and help on the actual days. If can help\, please register for the Kayak Kut (separate event 4/2/22) \nAlthough materials may have gone up in price this year we will be holding the cost to $300.  This covers all the lumber\, canvas\, glue and hardware.  You’ll only need to provide the Bondo filler\, paint (details will be provided during the build)\, and a few other minor items.  We’ll provide more information as we go along and you’ll be helped through the whole process.  We haven’t had a kayak not float yet! \nPlease sign up via the Troop Website\, clicking on the event [Kayak Build Day 1]\, this will bring up the sign-up page. \nKayak Kut — April 2 (Saturday)\, 2022  10:00pm-2:00pm (or until we’re finished).  This is an Adult Only Event.  It is optional for new parents (please email me if you’d like to sign-up/participate).\nKayak Build Day 1 — April 24 (Sunday)\, 2022  1:30am -5:30pm  —   Both Scout and Adult are required for the entire time.\nKayak Build Day 2 — May 7 (Saturday)\, 2022  8:30am-5:30pm  — Both Scout and Adult are required for the entire time.\nKayak Float and Picnic —  May 21 (Saturday)\, 2022  12 noon-?:00pm (provisional) — Final touches\, and paddle away …. \nThis is a really great event to get adults and their Scouts together\, and a memory (normally a good one) that everyone keeps for many years to come.  You don’t need to be planning on coming to Kayak Camp to build a kayak. \nPlease sign up and pay as soon as you can.  The hardest thing about organizing this is getting the numbers correct so that we buy the right amount of material. \nCOST: $300 \nIn order to secure your Kayak Build Spot\, due to PayPal challenges\, you must immediately send a check payable to: \nLos Altos Troop 37 \nc/o Tim Mitchell\n453 Rosita Avenue\nLos Altos\, CA 94024-4148 \nIf check is not received within 4 days of registration\, your spot may be released to someone else.
